Russet Class Blog
Year 3 & Year 4
Term 5
Week 3 and 4
As the first half of the (very short) summer term comes to a close, we need to reflect on the fabulous learning the children have done! From May Day dancing to mental maths, Russet Class have worked really hard this term and should be proud of all of their achievements.
The children loved learning about the Iroquois Tribe in history and used atlases to find the Equator and the Tropics. We also identified the different countries in both North and South America. We had so much sun this term which was very useful as we were studying the topic of 'Light' in science. We looked at light sources, reflective materials and even designed our own pair of sunglasses to protect our eyes from the dangerous UV rays. In R.E we leant about 'Pentecost' and discussed that special day through the eyes of Jesus's disciples.
The main event, however, was the whole school celebration of May Day! What a lovely day we had with the weather being definitely on our side! All the children looked beautiful in their 'Sunday best' and not putting a foot wrong in their dances. Well done everyone!
Mrs Pinfold and I would like to wish Russet Class and their families a restful half term and we look forward to seeing you all for the last term of this academic year!
Russet Term 5 Week 3 and 4
Week 1 and 2
Welcome back to the Summer Term!
Wow! I can't believe what a glorious, sunny couple of weeks we have had so far! We have really made the most of spending our time outside during PE lessons playing Kwik Cricket and practicing for our May Day dances. The children have been so committed and are taking their practices very seriously!
We started the topic of 'Light' in Science and the children have enjoyed finding out about different light sources, feeling for items in different 'feely bags' and discussing how reflective materials are used to keep people safe.
'Biographies' were introduced in English and the children have now chosen a subject for their individual biography writing. They are looking forward to researching their subjects in the next couple of weeks and finding out more about them.
Both Year 3 and 4 have completed the unit of 'Money' in maths and have now moved onto 'Time'. This is proving a little bit more tricky so I have asked Russet Class to try to practice this at home using analogue clocks. Perhaps you parents can help them please! Many thanks.
Have a lovely weekend in the sunshine!
Term 4
Week 1 and 2
Welcome back!
The children have all come back to school brilliantly and eager to learn!
As well as English, maths, science and all the other exciting lessons, the children have been learning how to develop their own websites using Microsoft Sway. The children have linked their English lessons about non chronological reports to making their own websites about particular animals, sports and even countries!
Russet 2025 Spring 2 Week 1 and 2
Term 3
Week 5 - 6
What an exciting last two weeks of half term we had!
Firstly, we had 'Longborough Opera' come and visit. They performed such an exciting and very skilled show for us all based around the circus! The children were mesmerised to see such talent and really enjoyed themselves!
We also had the 'Air Ambulance' come to talk and educate the children on this very worthy business. The children learnt all about how much it costs to fund the air ambulance and were pleased that we are currently fund raising for this very worthy cause.
The children were still working very hard in all subjects and they especially enjoying learning about Friction and carrying out an investigation involving toy cars. The children saw what would happen to the speed of the car when pushed at the same speed over different surfaces and could explain the reasons for the car going faster or slower.
Enjoy your half term everyone!
Russet Term 3 - Week 5 and 6
Week 3 - 4
Can't believe we are over half way until half term!
The children have worked incredibly hard over these past two weeks.
They have been learning how to write Viking playscripts, finished length and perimeter in maths and have really enjoyed using IMovie in computing. The children chose a book and then made their own book review using the IMovie software package. They took pictures and videos, recorded themselves talking and then put it altogether. They were amazing!
They have also been enjoying basketball with Mr Davies and gymnastics with Mr Hardman and have worked really hard to make up their own sequences using balance and travel.
The highlight of the week however, has got to be our trip to take part in Young Voices at the Birmingham NEC. All I can say is "Wow!" An amazing time was had by all and the children were a real credit to Ilmington Primary School showing maturity, enjoyment and respect!
Russet Spring Week 3 and 4
Week 1 - 2
Another term has started and Mrs Pinfold and myself have been so impressed with the mature learning attitudes of Russet Class - well done!
This term has started with the children learning about Viking myths. They have relished immersing themselves into the different stories, learning about Viking Gods and other different characters. 'Freya and the Goblins' proved a huge hit with the children and laughing when Freya had to kiss a cave full of goblins on the lips in return for a priceless necklace!
Multiplication and division continued in our maths lessons with the children in Year 4 trying really hard to understand column multiplication and using it in their problem solving and reasoning questions. They all were little superstars! Year 3 continued using the partitioning method of multiplication and also worked really hard!
Our history topic has started with 'Invasion' which is all about the Viking invasions and Anglo Saxon Kings. The children have really enjoyed finding out about the Vikings and realising that they didn't actually have horns on their helmets!
Science lessons have been about Forces and Magnets and the children have been looking at what makes a 'pull' and 'push' force. We have also looked into what is friction and when it is useful or not.
Swimming has also started and the children are absolutely loving it! They are brilliantly behaved and a real credit to Ilmington Primary School!
Term 2
Week 5 - 7
And so another term comes to an end with everyone earning a well deserved break.
Both myself and Mrs Pinfold want to congratulate the children on all their efforts this term.
The children have worked so hard and have really focused extremely well in everything that Russet Class offers.
Well done everyone and have a lovely Christmas holiday and a Happy New Year!
Russet Week 5,6,7
Week 3 and 4
The children have worked very hard in the past couple of weeks. We have started our topic of explanation texts in English and the children are going to be writing their own explanation text about the digestive system.
I have been super impressed by how well the children have grasped the maths skills we have been learning over the past couple of weeks. They have used them very well in their recent maths assessments and this shows a really good understanding - well done children!
The children have really enjoyed their dance lessons with Mr Hardman and are now practicing the skills learnt alongside music from well known films such as James Bond and Mission Impossible.
The children have enjoyed their computing lessons where we are using Scratch, the programming language for children. The children practiced using 'loops' this week where they were inputting code to make their sprites do an action over and over again. Then they used the 'forever' input command which made their sprite do an action indefinitely.
We had an amazing assembly from Severn Trent Water and then Russet Class were fortunate enough to have a water workshop afterwards. The children learnt so much about the water cycle, where water comes from and how it is cleaned so it is safe to drink. They were also set challenges about whether they were water wasters or not and unfortunately it turned out that we are! Siobhan gave us lots of smart tips on how to save water and made us realise how much water we actually use in our everyday lives!
Russet Week 3 and 4
Week 1 and 2
So another term has started. The children have come back fully refreshed and ready to learn after their half term holiday.
In English we have had a big push on full stops and capital letters with some really great accuracy going on. There are still some children that forget occasionally but they have some great techniques to help them remember and can pply these to their work.
Both Year 3 and 4 have been learning Multiplication and Division and the children have really tried hard in learning their times tables. I have had quite a few children who have scored full marks every single week but as long as the children are improving and trying their best I am happy!
The children have really enjoyed learning about the digestive system in science. They have all produced some excellent work in making their own presentations and describing how our digestive system works to the rest of the class.
In computing, the children were introduced to 'Scratch' which is a block based programming language that uses graphical blocks to introduce children to coding. The children loved making their own 'sprites' and programming them to move and to speak.
The Coventry Cathedral and Gurdwara trip was a big hit with Russet Class. They learnt about the life history of the cathedral and how it was tragically bombed during World War 2. It was so interesting to see part of history up close and personal and the children asked some really thought provoking questions. Visiting the Gurdwara was so interesting for the children. They learnt how, when and where Sikh's pray and what they do during their time in the Gurdwara. They learnt why they have to cover their heads, the type of clothes they wear and also about the different foods they eat.
Hope you all have a lovely weekend.
Russet Autumn 2 Week 1 and 2
Term 1
Week 7 and 8
Russet Class have worked extremely hard this term and should be extremely proud of themselves. The Year 3s have significantly grown in maturity and this has been with the help of the Year 4s. Well done Year 3 and 4, Mrs Pinfold and I are very proud of you all!
Also a big well done to Russet Class for their fantastic Harvest Performance. Everyone spoke confidently and clearly and explained the true meaning of Harvest.
After a long first term, week 8 has finally come to a close and the children really do deserve a rest for half term. There has been some truly brilliant work going on from everybody. The children have really enjoyed the Stone Age to Iron Age topic which will continue after half term. They have relished learning about Celts, Stonehenge and hill forts and are fascinated by the way of life back then. We have had some wonderful conversations and discussions.
Animals including Humans has been our science topic this term and will continue after half term. We have looked at the different muscles, joints and tendons in the body and also looked at how muscles relax and contract.
The children enjoyed looking into how Cave Art was used back in the Stone Age. The children have practiced drawing their own cave art animals and symbols and have shown some super concentration skills.
Maths (one of my my favourite topics!) has really been enjoyed by the children this term. The Year 4s especially are showing some superb focusing skills and are relishing their lessons, striving to do well and challenge themselves. Everyone is trying hard with their times tables and we have noticed such a significant improvement from everyone. Well done!
In English, the children loved learning about Idioms in the last week of term and understood the difference between their literal meanings and their figurative meanings. They especially enjoyed explaining their favourite idiom in a poster format.
Netball has been the focus of our PE lessons this term and we have been very lucky with the weather, enjoying most of our PE lessons outside. The children have also enjoyed floorball lessons with Mrs Kemp.
Music and French have also been enjoyed by the children.
Enjoy a wonderful half term everyone and look forward to welcoming you all back, relaxed and refreshed after your half term holiday.
Week 5 and 6
Another great couple of weeks in Russet Class.
The children have been working hard in producing persuasive pieces of writing about Healthy Eating. They have used persuasive language, researched facts and even used rhetorical questions (questions that don't need to have an answer!) They have thoroughly enjoyed this topic in English and have produced some brilliant writing!
Addition and Subtraction is coming to an end for the Year 3s and has come to an end for the Year 4s. I have been so impressed how both year groups have really focused on improving their maths skills and enjoyed using column addition and subtraction to solve problems. It is such an important skill to master and the children have worked really hard!
In science, the children have been learning about skeletons and researching into which types of skeleton animals and humans can have. They learnt a really catchy song to remember the bones of a human being and then matched the animal to whether it had a endoskeleton, exoskeleton or hydrostatic skeleton.
The children went back in time last week and practiced drawing bison in their sketch books. They stuck a picture into their sketch books and then carefully copied that picture, focusing on sketching skills.
The children loved learning about Stonehenge last week in history and we had some great discussions about how the giant stones were moved into place and how they travelled hundreds of miles. They enjoyed writing their own fact files about Stonehenge.
The children have also been enjoying music and French with Mr Kemp and Madame Eribenne and have loved their practical music lessons with the Colonel!
Until next time!
Russet Week 5 and 6
Week 3 and 4
We have had another couple of busy weeks with the children performing to their absolute best!
Both weeks have been full of healthy eating, finding out about our circulatory system and exploring more about the Stone Age to name a few! History was centred around the Neolithic village of Skara Brae which is found in Orkney, Scotland and is one of the best preserved prehistoric villages in Europe. The children found out what is was like to have lived there and then did their own detective work in asking questions about the village to research.
In science, the children discovered what the circulatory system does in our body. We found out about the function of the heart and then were very pleased to have scored 9/10 in a class quiz!
In Art this week the children really enjoyed producing pictures of Cave Art using charcoal. They discovered what it was like to produce images and drawings using different materials and then evaluated their work.
Our ‘recounts’ topic in English has now finished and we have now moved onto persuasive texts. The children have looked at the features of a persuasive text and are eventually going to produce their own pieces of persuasive writing about eating healthily and having a balanced diet.
Both Year 3 and 4 have now finished Place Value, which was our first maths topic. Place Value is such an important area to master and become confident in, as it shapes everything about the whole of the maths curriculum.
In PE, the children were lucky enough to have dodged the rain this week and be able to get outside and continue the ‘Netball’ topic. The children have looked at different types of throwing and were working on the skill of ‘pivoting’. They also enjoyed playing their own mini matches.
Russet Autumn1 Week 3and4
Week 1 and 2
A huge congratulations to Russet Class for coming back to school with such a great sense of maturity and enthusiasm to learn. I am so proud of the Year 4s in helping the Year 3s settle into ‘Junior School life’ and I am excited for the year ahead!
We had our SCARF session last Monday where Sue came in to speak to us about ‘How great it is to be me!’ The children were faced with different scenarios to discuss and it was wonderful to see them interacting with each other in such positive and thoughtful ways. The children were thrilled to be starting their PE lessons last Tuesday and have relished both the activities of Floorball and Netball and more importantly, working as a team!
The children have started the very important topic of Place Value in Maths and are working very hard. This topic forms the basis of every single maths lesson and it is encouraging to see the children working so hard and with such enthusiasm. In English, we started our ‘Recounts’ topic last week around our class text, ‘Stig of the Dump.’ The children are already keen to learn more about the main characters of Stig and Barney and are looking forward to writing a recount of when ‘the ground gave way’ and Barney fell into the pit and met Stig!
Our history topic this term is ‘Through the Ages’ and the children are already relishing learning about the Stone Age and how hunter gatherers survived in such a harsh and bleak environment.
How to eat healthily and have a balanced diet forms the first lessons of science this term where we are studying ‘Animals including humans’.
Until next time!
